Since 2002, I've been making belts the right way — with good leather, honest construction, and no shortcuts.

I Didn't Set Out to Become a Belt Maker. I Set Out to Find a Better Belt.

My story with leather belts began in 2002.

At the time, I wasn't looking to build a brand or create a business around belts. I simply recognized something that I think a lot of people eventually discover: a good leather belt is surprisingly hard to find.

I had the opportunity to learn the craft of belt making from an experienced leather craftsman. I learned how to cut leather, finish edges, install hardware, size belts properly, and—most importantly—how to recognize the difference between a belt that simply looks good when it is new and one that is built to last.

Over the years, belt making became more than just something I did. It became something I took pride in.

In 2010, I purchased the business and continued building on what I had learned, always with the same basic philosophy:

“Use good leather, build the belt correctly, and don’t cut corners.”

When the Leather Industry Changed, I Changed With It

For many years, I sold belts made from several well-known leather brands and manufacturers. At one point, those belts represented roughly 60-70% of my business.

But over time, I began noticing changes. The leather was becoming thinner. The construction wasn't what it once was. Belts from companies that had previously produced very good products simply weren't meeting the standards I wanted to offer my customers.

I had a choice: continue selling products because customers recognized the names — or focus on finding and making better belts.

That decision pushed me toward heavier full-grain leathers, including American cowhide and buffalo leather, and toward making more of the belts I sell myself.

Today, when I choose a piece of leather, I'm not looking for the cheapest hide or the easiest material to work with. I'm looking for leather with the weight, strength, character, and durability to become a belt someone can wear for years.

Working With Amish Craftsmen Raised My Standards Even Higher

In 2024, I began working with Amish leather craftsmen in Ohio.

I was immediately impressed by the attention to detail and the true quality of the belts they were making. These weren't lightweight fashion belts. They were made from exceptionally heavy leather, with straightforward construction and an emphasis on durability rather than shortcuts.

Working with the Amish made me take an even closer look at my own work. Their use of heavier hides encouraged me to search for better and thicker leather. I also picked up ideas about finishing and construction that I incorporated into the belts I personally make.

That experience ultimately inspired me to create Phil's Elite Belts — my highest level of handmade belts.

For those belts, I select some of the heaviest, highest-quality leather I can source and spend additional time on the finishing, conditioning, hardware, and small details that separate a good belt from an exceptional one.

One of the things I value most about running The Belt Shoppe is that there isn't a large corporation between you and the person responsible for your belt.

And if there is ever a problem, I'm here to take care of it. That matters to me.

I don't want The Belt Shoppe to simply be another website where someone buys a belt. I want it to be the place you think of when you need a belt.

A Belt You'll Still Be Wearing Years From Now

The greatest compliment I can receive isn't that a belt looked great when someone opened the package. It's hearing from someone years later.

I want a customer to pull a belt from their closet one morning and suddenly realize:

“I've had this belt for more than 10 years.”

And then look at it and realize it still has plenty of life left.

That's what I'm trying to build — belts that become a valuable part of your wardrobe. Something dependable you reach for year after year. And when you eventually need another belt, I want you to already know where you're going to get it.
